Well, the first volunteer day of 2010 has come and gone, and overall it was a great success! We were able to get the greenhouse cover on despite a chilly, windy day that was determined to prevent it from happening. Other jobs included working on the new chicken coop, planting some raised beds, and putting the flooring down inside the greenhouse.

When I wasn’t making pizzas from our propane oven, I spent some time working on breaking down cardboard and covering it with mulch for walkways in the garden. After Nancy cleared the path (aka the “hard work”) my job was to make sure the cardboard fit, that it didn’t blow away (or hit me in the head) and that I didn’t flip the wheelbarrow over while stumbling across the field with my mulch.

I’m looking forward to the gratifying part of putting plants into the ground, but I know that all this prep work will really make a difference. Check out more pictures from this day at the Felder Farm Facebook page….and maybe even become a fan!

Carrots and Chives

In the picture above you can see our row of carrots and chives we just planted. When planting this row we used a different method than we’d used in the past. Instead of simply pressing the seeds into the ground we mixed 1 packet of chives with 3 quarts of soil and then poured the mixture in a thin line along our drip tape. We did the same with the carrots. The process was much easier in the planting. Now we just have to wait to see how it all turns out.
